Custom Pet Portrait - FAQs
The Minimalist vs. The Maximalist - what’s the deal?!
Okay, let’s dive in. Your pet will look the same regardless of whether you go The Minimalist or The Maximalist route. The difference? The Maximalist comes with more flair, an opportunity to have your portrait have its own unique personality (just like your pet). You can always request tweaks to The Maximalist, but generally, we’ll put an oval frame around your pet and a banner that has their name. Behind your pet and the oval frame will be a fun backdrop.
You can request a simple standalone color as the backdrop, or take a look at existing backdrops already created - which can be found here. When filling out your add-to-cart-form, you can request whichever backdrop speaks to you & your pet.
OR, you can pay a small fee and request a new, custom backdrop. Maybe your pet had a favorite treat, a favorite place in nature, a favorite toy, etc. etc. - this is your chance to really customize the portrait. Rue Noelle will create a new custom backdrop based on your request.
So…. in summary, The Minimalist & The Maximalist will both give you a pet portrait. The Maximalist also gives you a frame, name banner, and backdrop, while The Minimalist will give you your pet with a white background. Both are beautiful options. What’s your style?!
What is Rue Noelle’s timeline and proofing process?
Rue Noelle’s general process is: create the portrait, email the proof for approval, send to our local print shops, and then drop in the mail.
Generally, you can expect the creation stage for a custom pet portrait to take between 2-3 weeks. If you’re ordering portraits for 2+ pets, Rue Noelle’s timeline will be more in the 3-4 week range. You can always email shop@ruenoelle.com to check in on timing or let us know if this is a rush order, and we’ll do our best to work something out.
You’ll receive an emailed proof from Rue Noelle before your print is sent off to the printer. Once you give your go-ahead, we’ll send your print to our local print shops. Depending on paper type, the printing process will take between 2-4 days. As soon as we have your print or framed print in-hand, it will be in the mail to you! You’ll receive tracking info via email.
*NEW* what are your framing options?
*New as of July 2026!* Yay — you can now select “frame” or “no frame”! If you select “no frame”, you’ll receive a print of your pet portrait and can add it to whatever frame you have.
If you would like to receive a framed, ready-to-hang print, you can now select “frame” as an option. This will add on a cost ranging between $8 - $20 depending on print size.
Here’s the fun part (we think): Rue Noelle has a variety of frames & sizes in a small office, and we LOVE to match frames to prints. If you trust us fully - we can pick out a frame to match your pet portrait. Here’s what you should know about this process:
We will ALWAYS send you a photo of the frame to approve before shipping. You can say no and we’ll keep keep looking for that perfect frame for you!
We are very conscious of using safe materials so always do our best to source frames that adhere to standards like Cal Prop 65
You can also add any frame preferences to the “additional requests” section of the add to cart frame. Colors, matting vs. no matting, etc.
We are excited to collaborate with you on framing and offer ready-to-hang portraits!! We are testing this out so if you have feedback on the process, we’re all ears :)
Submitting your pet photos - what are the best photos to send?
Each and every pet is unique, and each has unique proportions. Try to send a capture that captures the most amount of their body! If you’d like just a headshot portrait, send in a picture that has them looking the way you’d like them to in the portrait (e.g. head on, to the side, etc.). For full body, any photos that capture the majority of their body are great! If you’re still looking for guidance, our best recommendation is to send a photo (or photos) of your pet in their most natural position (maybe sitting and looking at you for a dog or cat, a beautiful headshot of your pig, your chicken in full sprint). You can always email shop@ruenoelle with your ideas and to get any recommendations! We will always reach out if we need another photo or two to do your pet justice.
Can I request a black & white version of my pet?
Gorgeous! A timeless way to honor your pet. Just request this in your email or in the “additional requests” form.
Can you add my pet’s name with The Minimalist style portrait?
Yes! When filling out the form after you “add to cart”, make a note in your additional requests! We’ll add a simple script of your pet’s name below the drawing, but feel free to make a specific placement request and font style.
Can you do any type of pet?
All pets are welcome! Send in your pet chicken, pig, horse, cat, etc : )
